Assessment

Assessment

Students are banded when they first join the Academy based on their Key Stage 2 Scores and CAT tests. They then sit two Progress Point tests each year until the end of Year 11. Using this quantitative data and teachers' qualitative information about the student including student effort, teachers will set realistic but aspirational targets. Students in Years 7, 8 and 9 are reviewed regularly to ensure that they are in the correct band to ensure the correct level of support is given and that students are given the ability to be stretched academically. Students are also assessed on entry for their Reading and Spelling Ages, this information is used to target appropriate intervention and highlight potential learning needs and is shared with teachers to support their planning of lesson content and resources.

KPI Assessments

Twice a year all students will take KPI assessments which will look at all the knowledge and skills they have developed in each course. The week before each test their will be a revision session in each subject going over the core content of the subject. Students will then be taught how to revise and prepare for their test. After each test teachers will reteach any common errors or misconceptions to help students move forward in their education.

In Class Assessments “Demonstrates”

Each half term students will complete a piece of work independently which will enable them to show what they have learnt and what they can do in each subject. After each demonstrate students will be given feedback on their work and given time to correct it to aid their understanding.

Assessment for learning

Teachers constantly assess students. This helps the teacher to understand what students know and can do. The main ways in which we do this in lessons are: -

  • Asking the class to repeat key words or ideas in posed questions.
  • Posing questions to the whole class, giving thinking time before selecting students to answer a question.
  • Teachers activity observing work, asking development questions and checking for understanding of the work being completed.
  • Teacher uses student work to prompt further learning, analysis, and revision.
  • Students to write a response to a discussion question before they discuss it as a class. Then it asks them to take notes on the discussion in order to revise and improve their original idea.
  • Students quickly display their work (often on a whiteboard) for immediate visual assessment by the teacher.
