Author inspires students

An award-winning author made the first trip from Somercotes Academy to Mablethorpe Library memorable.

Nathanael Lessore has built a reputation for writing engaging books aimed at children and young adults.

He spoke to Years 7 and 8 about his writing career and where his enjoyment of reading came from.

Nathanael told them anyone could be an author and his role, in part, was to communicate a positive message to young people.

Students also enjoyed a question and answer session, book-related craft and a puzzle activity linked to reading.

The students left the event with a free book, many signed by the author.

The library reached out to the academy about a visit. Some students said they had not been to one before.

The visit was organised by Venexia Ashton Wood, SENDCO and Reading Lead and Nicola Gardner, Curriculum Leader for English.

Nicola thanked Mablethorpe Library, World Book Day organisers and Nathanael for hosting a great day for our students.

It had been an informative and engaging event.

Students had asked some excellent questions. For example, Harlen wondered where the author's inspiration had come from to write the book.

Paul Kaylow, Senior Vice Principal, said: "This was an excellent opportunity for our students to visit the library and meet a real author.

"The national picture shows that reading is an issue and this type of event really encourages students to read and break down some of the barriers students face."
